What is BOTOX ®?

BOTOX ® is a trade name of purified form of a botulinum toxin type A, produced by the Clostridium Botulinum bacteria. Injection of exceptionally small dose of the drug to selected facial muscles eliminates problems caused by contraction of muscles.

How does BOTOX ®work?

BOTOX ® blocks transit of stimulus from nerves to fine facial muscles, connected with facial expression lines. This prevents contraction of these muscles, and at the same time browning and corrugation of the skin. BOTOX ® works only within the range of muscles, in which it was injected, while the remaining muscles function as up till now. As a result, the facial expression does not change, yet wrinkles disappear.

What does the treatment involve?

BOTOX ® is injected using a disposable syringe, with a very fine needle. A very small amount of BOTOX ® is dissolved in salt solution and is injected very precisely into several places on the face. The pain, related to injections, is minimal. Many patients compare it to few seconds’ ant bite. The treatment does not require local anesthesia, so right after it is finished it is possible to go on with normal active life. The treatment takes approximately 15 minutes, depending on the number of places being treated. BOTOX ® starts working after 2-3 days from the injection, and a full effect of the treatment can be seen only after 7 days.

When can BOTOX ® be used?

BOTOX ® is mainly used for removal of:

• wrinkles in between the eyebrows
• horizontal forehead lines
• crow’s feet and laugh lines in between the eyes
• smoothing neck lines
• lifting brow lines, which gives a younger look and softens expression of the eyes

Doctors obtained good effects in softening the nasal-lip folds, between the nose and lips, lip lines ("smoker’s lips") and wrinkles and folds on the chin.

How long does the effect last?

The advantage of the BOTOX preparation is that effects of the treatment are temporary. It stays for 3-5 months or longer, depending on the patient. The effect of the treatment gradually disappears. The injections should be made 2-3 times per year.

Is treatment with the use of the BOTOX preparation safe?

BOTOX is a safe preparation in use for the past 10 years, in over 60 countries, among patients with many health problems. Sensitivity and livedo in the injection location are among the most common undesirable effects.

In some cases, BOTOX can go through local muscles and cause their temporary weakness. There are rare cases of slight and reversible eyelid and eyebrow dropping (ptosis), lasting 1-2 weeks. Your physician can prescribe eye drops, which will help remove this undesired effect. The risk depends on the muscle, to which the preparation is being injected. The problem of undesired effects should be discussed in detail with the physician before the treatment. BOTOX should not be injected during pregnancy and breastfeeding period, due to insufficient amount of tests that would confirm lack of influence of the drug onto the foetus and mother’s milk.

Can the treatment with BOTOX ® be mixed with other treatments?

BOTOX ® is often applied with other facelift treatment, which improves the effect. It is a local treatment, thus does not interfere with other methods, such as collagen or laser lift.

Is BOTOX ® designated for women only?

BOTOX ® is just as effective for men and women. In practice, men more often decide to do this treatment, to look younger. Effectiveness in removing worry lines causes, that the method is popular among many businessmen, giving them fresh look and increasing popularity (for instance when conducting negotiations.)
