What is the FRAXEL®SR laser treatment?

Until now, all (conventional) laser treatments provided good effects, however at the expense of considerable side effects, risk and long healing and recovery processes. Treatments with the Fraxel® SR laser are based on innovative technology that features the best components of the old systems — excellent results without detriment to safety, minimized side effects, considerably shortened healing process and much shorter therapy.

What does the Fraxel® laser treatment involve?

On the contrary to the traditional laser dermabrasion, during which an entire layer of the skin is removed at once, the treatments performed with the use of the Fraxel® laser are selectively applied onto the skin, creating a pattern of evenly distributed microthermal zones. The laser beam is directed to these zones, which deeply and precisely penetrates both the subcutaneous tissue and the stratum corneum. Because the surrounding skin is intact, the healing process is usually fast, and the treatment does not leave any visible wounds. Therefore the Fraxel® laser is considered a breakthrough in aesthetic medicine.

How many treatments will I need?

According to the schedule, approximately 20%-25% of the surface of treated skin is exposed during a single Fraxel® laser treatment. Clinical trials suggest that the best results are visible after 3-5 treatments, performed every 2-4 weeks. Depending on the extent and the location of lesions, after consultation with the patient the physician can decide to do the treatments less often. The effects are immediate and progressive. The beam of the Fraxel® laser also stimulates deeper layers of the skin to produce new collagen, which decreases over the years, and therefore the optimal effect is usually visible after 2-3 months.

Where can the Fraxel® Laser therapy be applied?

Fraxel® Laser can be applied all over the body, wherever it is possible to apply dermabrasion. On the contrary to the treatments with the old style lasers, the Fraxel® Laser allows to rejuvenate the neck and the cleavage, which before were impossible to treat. 

Are treatments with the Fraxel® Laser safe?

The Fraxel® Laser technology was certified by the US Food and Drug Administration. The treatment is safe and there are no records of scaring or infections. Small blisters and / or temporary discolorations could appear in cases of more intensive treatments, especially among patients with darker complexion.

Are treatments with the Fraxel® Laser painful?

Patients usually experience a stabbing pain, which is well tolerated. In order to reduce patient’s discomfort, it is possible to administer oral painkillers just before the treatment.

How long does every session of the treatment take?

Every session can take from 10 to 45 minutes, depending on the size of the treated area.

How fast can I get back to my normal lifestyle?

Most patients can get back to their normal activities immediately after the treatment. No special treatment is required, the patients can undergo other routine skincare treatments directly afterwards. After the treatment the treated areas could be exposed to slight redness or swelling, as well as moderate burning or itching, which usually passes after couple of hours. The redness could stay on for couple of days, and the skin could get a “tanned” tone. After approximately one week and healing of the microscopic size areas, where the skin was treated, the skin tone returns back to normal. In very rare cases, when the applied treatment was extensive, there could be small scabs or blisters.

Sun protection: After the treatment, the skin should be regularly treated with creams containing UV filters: applied at least twice a day when the skin is healing and in course of next few months. It is important to use creams with SPF 30 or higher (and in case of extremely sensitive skin — UV blockers.)

When will the effects be visible?

Most patients will notice the difference already within several days after the treatment. However a true benefit of the treatment consists in “modelling” of collagen fibres in deep layers of the skin. Therefore the patient shall experience gradual improvement as well as smoothing out and improvement of the skin turgor over the period of one year after the series of treatments.

Are the effects of treatments with the Fraxel® Laser lasting?

Lesions of the epidermis and collagen fibres caused by Fraxel® Laser are lasting; however, the sun, time and gravitation all reap their harvest. The Fraxel® Laser “puts back the clock”, yet it does not have the power to stop it.
